The CERN & Society Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of two new members to the Foundation Board: Daphne de Laleu and Michel Spiro. They will join the Board starting from 1 January 2020.

Daphne de Laleu pursued her Masters in International Law Studies (San Francisco) and Development Studies (Geneva and Hanoi). Since 2017, she works as a Senior Partnership Manager for Corporates and Foundations at Save the Children Switzerland. Before joining Save the Children, she served at Terre des Hommes Switzerland, UNICEF, ROLEX philanthropic institute, UNESCO-L’Oreal partnership for women in science, World Economic Forum, and the OSCE mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Michel Spiro PhD in physics (Saclay/Orsay), is a French physicist and has served as President of CERN Council from 2010 – 2013. Prior to this, he worked as a Particle and Astroparticle physicist at the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). He later served as the director of the Particle Physics Section of the Department of Astrophysics, Particle Physics, Nuclear Physics and Associated Instrumentation (DAPNIA), as the Director of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics and Particle Physics (IN2P3) at CNRS (from 2003 to 2010) and as Professor at Ecole Polytechnique. He is also the recipient of Juliot-Curie Prize of the French Physical Society, Felix Robin Prize, Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur, and Prix Lagarrigue. He is now President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP).

The Foundation is an independent not-for-profit entity under swiss law. The purpose of the CERN & Society Foundation is to support and promote the dissemination, to the widest extent possible, the benefits of CERN’s mission. The Board is responsible for the overall direction, management and administration of the Foundation, and its assets and takes decisions according to the provisions set forth in the Articles of Association on all matters concerning the Foundation. The Foundation’s Board members hold meetings throughout the year, at approximately four-monthly intervals.

We are more than pleased to welcome the two new board members to support the continued ambition of the CERN & Society Foundation.

In today’s globalised fragile context both our planet and the next generation face major challenges. A Foundation such as the CERN & Society can definitely be a force for good in society, and the opportunity I have today to serve and actively contribute as Board member is highly inspiring. Indeed Education & Outreach, Innovation & Knowledge Exchange, and Culture & Creativity are specific areas of focus whereby for the inspiration and benefit of society sustainable impacts may be achieved.

I very well identify my task with the mission of the CERN § Society foundation: contribute to spreading the spirit of CERN scientific curiosity, and I would add also of CERN organization, for the inspiration and benefit of society!
